Re-Install Crossmix-OS – TrimUI Smart Pro

How to Re-install CrossMix-OS on the TrimUI Smart Pro

Crossmix-OS - TrimUI Smart Pro

So you need to reinstall CrossMix-OS.  Not a problem.  If you have run into issues from updates to breaking something, I’ve got you covered.

Back Up Your All Data

The most important step is to always back up your data before you do an update, and generally a good idea to do it weekly.  If you have not done that yet and it’s already too late, it’s still recommended that you back up what you can into a folder you can store on your PC or an external drive.   To do so, just copy all the data from your MicroSD card and store it in a folder for safekeeping.

So back it up.

Saves, Roms, Images, BIOS, Custom Files

These are normally the largest parts of your SD card.   If your SD card is typically in good condition, what you can do is create a folder called “BAK”.    This is where you’ll store all your primary files before you replace all of the CrossMix-OS directory files.

If your MicroSD card is large enough to have at least 5GB+ of room left on it, you could just move all files right into the “BAK” folder, which would be the best thing to do, as you could search for things you might have missed instead of deleting them.  If not, that is fine.  So, what should be the main things to put in the “BAK folder”?

ROMS

  • The “Roms” directory contains all of your Game Files, and a lot of the saves are located here, too.  For example, the Super Nintendo “SFC” folder will store the SNES games and .snes9x_libretro, which holds the save “.state” and thumbs for the save states.  Move “Roms” to the “BAK” folder.

IMGS

  • The “Imgs” directory contains all of your Game Thumbnails.  For example, the Super Nintendo “SFC” folder will hold all the “.png” thumbnails of those games.
Move “Imgs” to the “BAK” folder.

SAVES

Not all of the saves are located in the “Roms” directory.  Some could be located in other locations.

  • Emus Folder
The “Emus” folder.  For example, the PPSSPP “PSP” game saves are located here: Emus\PSP\PPSSPP_1.17.1\.config\ppsspp\PSP\SAVEDATA
This SAVEDATA directory should also be saved to the “BAK” folder.  Just remember where to place it after.  (PPSSPP version might be different later on) Just keep notes of that.
  • Standalone Emulators
Some other standalone emulators don’t use the standard “Roms” directory to save their games, so you’ll need to know which emulators you were using to save from.  Example for N64 Mupen64Plus saves its game files here: \Emus\N64\mupen64plus\save
  • RetroArch
RetroArch is another location where some saves could be located.  RetroArch\.retroarch\saves

So again, that means that should also be backed up in the “BAK” folder, and again, remember where to place it after.

BIOS

  • Just move the whole “BIOS” folder to the “BAK” folder.

CUSTOM

  • If you have created custom folders like Videos, Music or whatever you made, move that over to the “BAK” folder.

RETROARCH

  • Screenshots
If you have taken screenshots with RetroArch, they are located here: RetroArch\.retroarch\screenshots
  • Custom Data
If you have custom data in cheats, or any other directory folder, back that up.  If you are unsure, it’s best to revert back to the default CrossMix-OS files.

Notes

If you think you have backed up everything you think you need, you should be ready to reinstall CrossMix-OS.  If you backed up your data to a folder on your PC and if you were able to backup all of the files to the “BAK” folder, you at least have two directories, just in case you missed something you need to re-add.

Re-Install CrossMix-OS

This next part is similar to the “How to install CrossMix-OS on the TrimUI Smart Pro” blog post I did, so a lot of this is just a copy and paste with minor tweaks.

Crossmix-OS - TrimUI Smart Pro

  1. Download and Extract CrossMix-OS
Download the latest version of CrossMix Os here: https://github.com/cizia64/CrossMix-OS
  2. Delete all files on the MicroSD card besides the “BAK” folder you created.
  3. Open the CrossMix-OS .zip you’ve downloaded. (I recommend with 7zip)
  4. Select all files within that .zip and drag and drop them to the MicroSD card main directory beside your “BAK” folder.
  5. After all files have been re-added, delete “BIOS”, “Imgs”, “Roms” and replace it with the ones in your “BAK” folder.
  6. Any other saves or custom files in your “BAK” folder can go back to the directory from which they came from.

So, pretty much you’re just replacing defaults with your data so everything can resume without problems.

Ending Notes

Not everything is fully backed up, like password login to Retroachivements, your theme settings, maybe controller settings or whatever you might have missed.   It’s best to just set all that back up.  The more vanilla the files, the better.

If you need more information to set some of the others up, like RetroAchivements, go look at my other post, I go into more details on that here: https://destructiveburn.com/trimui-smart-pro-crossmix-os/

Be sure to back up your data, It might be simpler to just restore a weekly backup and the saved file you’ve been playing, so you don’t need to go through all that again.
