Description

I’ve created a browser extension that will change the browser’s new tab with a selected site or custom URL of your choice.

Setting Up

  1. Open the options menu.
  2. Select a site or open the custom URL input from the selector drop-down menu and add a URL of your choice.
  3. Focus Address Bar: Focus on the browser’s address bar or not.
  4. Save
    Note: Custom URL can load both online and offline URLS. So, for example: https://example.com/ or file:///C:/Users/UserName/Desktop/example.html

 

How do I Open The Options menu?

  1. Click on the Extension Icon: In the Browser toolbar, look for the icon of this extension. It might be located to the right of the address bar or in the Browser menu (the three dots at the top right corner of the browser window).
  2. Right-click on the Extension Icon: If clicking directly on the icon doesn’t open the options menu, try right-clicking on it. This action may reveal a context menu where you can select “Options” or a similar option.
  3. By following these steps, you should be able to easily open the options menu of the extension and customize its settings according to your preferences.

 

How Does it Work?

  • Custom New Tab: By default, when you open a new tab in Google Chrome, it shows you a blank page with a search bar. This extension changes that behaviour.
  • Custom URL: With this extension installed, you can set a specific website to open every time you open a new tab instead of the default blank page.
  • Options Page: The extension provides an options page where you can easily customize which website you want to open in your new tab. You can choose from a list of popular search engines and websites or enter a custom URL of your choice.
  • Focus Address Bar: You also have the option to focus directly on the address bar when the new tab opens, making it convenient for you to start typing a new URL or search query immediately.
  • Simple and Personalized: This extension offers a simple way to personalize your browsing experience by ensuring that your preferred website or search engine is always just a new tab away.

 

How Can I Set or Select a URL?

  1. Open the options menu at the top right.

  2. Select or use a custom URL to add your own URL link

  3. Press save. That’s it. If you want the Focus to be on the Browser Address bar, keep it checked.

When you add a site URL to the new tab, it may load slowly. I’ve added a loader icon, loading title and useless quotes about why pages don’t load in a goofy way just to give you something to look at while waiting.

Sequence.

  1. 0 Seconds: Loader Icon + Name: Loading Page…
  2. 7 Seconds: Loader Icon + Name: This is taking longer than usual. Hold tight…
  3. 10 Seconds: Loader Icon + Useless quotes
  4. 15 Seconds: Loader Icon + Name: It seems the page won’t load, or the extension hasn’t been set up yet. Please try again later or change the URL in the Options Menu. “Open Options Menu”

The reason why I added the Open Options Menu is that if someone adds the extension but does not set it up, they will have a way to the options menu if they have not yet opened the menu from the toolbar.

When you don’t add a custom URL, press save.

I’ve added a blank page with a collection of empty quotes. This page serves as a placeholder for situations where no custom URL has been specified and a way back to the options page. The empty quotes are just something to laugh at if you ever find the page.

Address Bar Focus Settings

The “Address Bar Focus” setting determines whether the focus (cursor) is automatically placed in the browser’s address bar when the new tab is opened. If this setting is enabled, users can start typing their desired URL or search query immediately after opening a new tab without having to click on the address bar first. When disabled, the (cursor) will use the available input on the page of the site loaded.
